There are so many fewer lightning bugs than when I was a child! It makes me sad, for sure.

We were so interested to learn about whole parks devoted to them in Japan. Agreed with Mamie about light pollution, which we'll write about Friday. Where we live, there aren't any outdoor lights, which helps.

Years ago, at late dusk, I saw the amazing synchronous lightning bug light show !

I was at the base of the hill, making my way from the riverbank to my house and there it WAS !

At the time I was unaware that it was a "thing" so I thought it was miraculous !

I had no idea that glow worms were developing lightning bugs. Also why do they make your hands so stinky? The smell is unmistakable. My love to all.

That is a good question! One thing we learned about fireflies is that they taste terrible to predators--this is a defense mechanism. The chemicals they release that make them bitter (toads have this too) also make them smell bad to us.

i love this FTT so much! i have been so worried about the fireflies/lightning bugs because i hadn’t seen any but they are back in Walkerton again! Thankfully most of our streetlights have burned out and the power company is a little bit afraid of me !

as always Gr8 FTT!!!
