So there are a lot of downy woodpeckers that visit, there are sometimes red-bellied woodpeckers, even less often I see a hairy woodpecker, and a northern flicker (are those woodpeckers?) - they all enjoy the suet cakes with the worms in them! Also, in the fall, I see a few yellow-bellied sap suckers (not sure if those are woodpeckers either but they do make holes in trees with their beaks!) eating the berries off the poison ivy that grows in the trees!
My favorite are the Northern Flickers; I think they are so beautiful!
Just looked up the northern flicker--man, those are some beautiful birds! I love their colors and pattern. And yes, sapsuckers are woodpeckers! They make two kinds of holes--small, deep holes and shallow rectangular ones.
Oh i love this post! I hear the woodpeckers all the time and it is always magical to actually spot one- they are BIG! I also see the small variety at my feeder all the time (they love the suet)- Lately I have had many bluebirds (they love mealworms!) and for two weeks I had Orioles! that was a big surprise- they are so beautiful- will have to send you all a picture. Meanwhile, thank you for the FTT! always fun to read and I ALWAYS learn something!! xoxo
Serious stuff on the cats > even if they don't kill the bird (we had a "family" cat kill a Northern Flicker) the bacteria of a cat scratch/bite will sicken the bird likely enough to kill it.
Also - we sat around wanting to see red-cockaded woodpeckers in south georgia yesterday, but they are super super tiny. They make their nests in live trees > the only NA woodpecker to do so.
Today’s post was a fascinating read! I love the sound of wood peckers pecking, and now I know why they do it. My love to all.
Thank you, Anne! Love to you too.
