That is, for sure, the cutest photo of the erstwhile dog door !
Look for the knots on the interior wainscoting , to the right of the door, where I installed the board with knots that reminded me of a dog face... ( the knots are the eyes)
i have to add that Belle’s Bea’s and Harriet’s chanterelles are gorgeous and delicious! also when Belle and Sky were little we also had dandelion flowers dipped in tempura batter and fried and they were delicious!
Julian and I have been in Lake James for a lot of this year. There are blackberries that grow in the rocks along the edge of the water. All spring we would paddle by on kayak while Julian used a water canon of lake water to tend to the blackberries as they blossomed. We investigated the hard red berries while swimming in water too cold to stay in for more than ten minutes. Nope. Not ready yet. This last visit, the end of June, was the week of fruition. We got to swim up, basking in sun, and carefully crawl up the rocks to pick berry after berry off and pop them into our mouths. At the start of the week it was only a smaytering. But by today, the branches hung heavy at the edge of the water. More than we could eat. We swam to our (less eager) family with fists full of deep purple jewels. "Blackberry delivery! Blackberry delivery!"
We did not see any snakes this week, but we did see: musk turtles, great blue heron, green heron, kingfisher, blue gills, chipmunk, squirrel, and what we think was evidence of an otter.
If "chicken of the woods" means the idea of foraging terrifies you because you are certain you would forage and chow down on something deadly poisonous, then yes, I am a chicken of the woods with a capital C. My daughters have nicknamed me Paranoid Patti and think I would make a perfect character for SNL. Happy Fourth Of July! My love to all.
before Belle was born we moved to a little farmhouse on 2200 acresof woods and lake and river and farmland!
pregnant with Belle i foraged lambs quarter (tastes like spinach!) wild asparagus and creesy greens but i was afraid to try the mushrooms!( i lived to tell the tale

Cool! Bea sees a cow but I see the dog's face very clearly. Thanks! In our photo you can see cat fur on the erstwhile dog door!

We LOVE otters. That was a debated animal week subject for July, but we picked beavers. Stay tuned!
Beautiful!

It's good to be careful! But we could teach you!
