I saw the movie Jaws with your mom (Mamie) in the summer of 1975 in Virginia Beach with several of my younger first cousins who were horrified!

Ha! I bet! I was 22 when I saw The Blair Witch Project and I was so glad I was about to move to California.

I have successfully avoided both The Blair Witch Project and Sharks my entire life and I’m not planning to undo my record.

One thing that the girls might find interesting, is that as an undergrad, I lifted sharks out of a holding tank in order to draw their blood to look for a precursor of serum albumin (a protein in mammalian blood) for my senior research project.

The sharks had been inadvertently brought in by nets on the research vessel sampling the marine life off the Crystal Coast. The sharks were all returned to the Atlantic after they’d been sorted from the other species and after I’d handled them.

Sharks have one giant blood vessel running near their spine, which is a cartilage-like material instead of bone. After a bit, it became pretty easy to find the vessel and get them back into the tank, though the bigger ones were heavy.

Because they carry their offspring internally, even though they aren’t mammals, I was shocked when a flailing shark “threw” her babies at me. I’d had no idea this could even happen! Flying sharks! Who knew? I was tossing little baby sharks into the tank as fast as I could, too startled to do anything else, and without even a camera to get pics of baby sharks in the air.
