Bea, when I was in elementary school in California in the 1970s, I wanted to be an oceanographer! I always loved animals, land or sea, and I was fortunate to go to a school that had an oceanography unit in the curriculum (across 4th-6th grades, so you could repeat every year) that included overnight camping field trips to the tide pools at Leo Carillo State Park. I remember studying and touching (always gently, never displacing) starfish, urchins, anemones, and even sea cucumbers (which have the best and silliest name). We also did a whale watching boat trip each year (I remember eating pretzels and lemon drops to try to stop nausea). I'm not sure when I stopped wanting to be an oceanographer (probably when I got frustrated with not feeling adequate in or excited by science classes), but I remain fascinated by underwater worlds and never miss a chance to learn more about life in the ocean. I hope you get to take a field trip soon!

That would be so cool! Did the lemon drops make your bones light up like lightbulbs? (That's a Dory Fantasmagory joke!)

I wish! I can report that I never got sick on a boat, though, so they must have worked their magic, even though that's not half as fun as being illuminated from within.

Great post, Bea ... !

That Loblolly Pine is (by far ) the largest one that I have ever seen !

Years ago (prior to the eagles moving in) three of us went to visit it and it was 2 1/2 adult arm spans in circumference. We estimated 14 feet.

Thanks for describing your day and what you saw and thought about. I especially liked that you could tell how much effort must have gone into compacting the piece of eagles' nest you found - it looks so solid!

Thank you for encouraging me to try harder to convince people who have not gotten the vaccine to get it. I want children like you, Harriet, Charlie, Isaiah, Jesse, and Miles to be able to have the experiences that I took for granted as a child. I really hope you get a chance to go on a field trip this school year. On Thursday Miles and I went to the Target Superstore on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh to get a few supplies for a project. I did not realize that a Target Superstore isn't super at all; it almost has nothing but groceries. The best thing Miles and I discovered there was the escalator. Miles just turned five and even before covid he had only been to places that had escalators a few times because we aren't shoppers. When Miles saw the escalator he was so excited! He didn't remember ever having ridden on one. He rode it about 15 times.( Don't worry; we always wear masks in public, and of course I have been vaccinated) It hurt my heart to think that Miles at 5 years old was in his mind experiencing an escalator for the first time. Of course he knew what they were from books, but something so ordinary as an escalator, for him, was like seeing on Octopus at an aquarium on a school field trip. I will work harder to assure people that vaccines are safe for you, and Miles, and everyone else! My love to you and your family.

What a great field trip! I've never seen a piece of an eagle's nest up close. That was really interesting. I hope you get to go to the Greensboro science center because I think they have an octopus there. August is looking forward to be able to get vaccinated, too. It would be great if everyone who was eligible would just hurry up and do it so kids like you and August could be more protected.
