Three cool things to try

1. It’s primary day in North Carolina, and I took Bea with me to vote—easy, since our polling place is also her elementary school. On our way into the gymnasium, her P.E. teacher assured Bea that they’d still have class today—just outside. “Phew,” Bea said. After Bea fed my ballot into the machine, we talked to one of the election judges, who gave us “I voted” stickers and told us about her job there. Later, I looked it up and learned that in NC (and many other states), you can serve as an election official at 17 years old. Especially right now, when it’s hard to find election judges, this would be a great public service and window into democracy (maybe also a good subject for a college essay?).

2. If you want to make a kid really happy, give them a Venus fly trap as a surprise. I picked one up at a garden center today and gave it to Bea after school. She was ecstatic (her word, not mine), and has been looking for flies to feed it ever since. Bea says a Venus fly trap would even be a good birthday present (“for some people,” she qualified).

3. Finally, try the New York Times crossword puzzle today—it was constructed by Richard! We’re really proud of him, and appreciated this nice review of his very fun debut NYT puzzle.

Okay, one more cool thing! We picked up some pink oyster mushrooms from Haw River Mushrooms at our farmer’s market and enjoyed them sautéed over farro with carrots, broccolini, and seven-minute eggs. Delicious (not to mention someone’s favorite color)!
