Support Your Independent Bookstore
so they can keep supporting our communities and schools! (+ keep reading for an opportunity to get books to kids in Western Chatham County)
Happy Friday, Frog Troublers! We have a special post today because tomorrow is an important holiday around these parts: Independent Bookstore Day!
Independent bookstores are great because:
-They bring authors to our communities and schools. They often partner with local schools and nonprofits on book sales and events, and most indie stores host free storytimes for young childen.
-Local bookstores like McIntyre’s, Flyleaf, and So and So also host community literary organizations, from the NC Poetry Society to Redbud Writing Project.
-Shopping local supports our local economy—not a giant company that cares only about profits.
-They help the environment by the reducing waste associated with shipping individual books.
-They employ smart and talented people who love to read, and who can give great advice about your next read. Just this week we picked up a book at McIntyre’s (a gift for one of Harriet’s friends) because Johanna recommended it. Pete wrapped the book for us in beautiful paper, and we’re excited to take it to a birthday party tomorrow.
Tomorrow is also our beloved McIntyre’s Bookstore’s 35th birthday, and they are celebrating all day, with raffles every half-hour, readings, a special storytime at 10:30 in Fearrington town center, and donations to Chatham Reads for every book sold.
If you’re in Chapel Hill, why not stop by Flyleaf Books? They’ve got all kinds of fun things planned too, and are taking part in a citywide bookstore crawl.
But what we’d most like you to do, if you can manage it? Order a copy of The Perfect Place or El lugar perfecto by Matt de la Peña for students at Siler City Elementary or Virginia Cross Elementary. Flyleaf will automatically give you a 10% discount—just write “donated copy” in the comments (and choose either the Spanish or English version—or maybe one of each, like we did!). The donated copies will go to students at each school, and will also ensure that this Newbery award-winning author can visit Kindergarten through second grade classes there!
Imagine how cool it will be for a kid to get their very own book, signed and personalized by an important, award-winning, Latinx author!
Thank you to Flyleaf for offering the discount, delivering the books, and making this awesome opportunity possible.
Come back Sunday for a little celebration of Harriet, who is turning six! We’ll tell you all about her party-on-wheels.
Love from us at the FTT.
Thanks for another great issue! I love all the love for independent bookstores.
